21 Similarities: Twilight Saga and Buffy The Vampire Slayer

(Previously posted under a pseudonym in 2012.)

I've been a huge Buffy fan since I started watching it nearly 12 years ago while I was just a kid. So I couldn't help but to notice overwhelming similarities between the Twilight Saga and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I'll go ahead and lay them out, it's up to you to decide whether or not these were deliberate or pure coincidence.

Here are 21 similarities I found between The Twilight Saga (2008, 2009, 2010) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003).

1.

Angel saves Buffy from group of attackers before she knew he was a vampire.
Edward saves Bella from group of attackers before she knew he was a vampire.

Buffy: (Season 1, episode 7): When walking alone one night, Buffy is surrounded by a group of warrior vampires. Just when things are about to look bad for her, Angel comes out of the dark and saves her. Then after running off, they spend some alone time together in her room.
Twilight: When walking alone one night, Bella is surrounded by a group of drunk men. Just when things are about to look bad for her, Edward drives in from the dark and saves her. Then after running off, they spend some alone time together in a restaurant.

Buffy becomes infatuated with Angel before she knew he was a vampire.
Bella becomes infatuated with Edward before she knew he was a vampire.

Buffy: (Season 1, episodes 1-7): From the very beginning, Buffy has had a sense of attraction to Angel. At times she would share her feelings with Willow and write about Angel in her diary. She had a feeling he was different.
Twilight: From the very beginning, Bella had a sense of attraction toward Edward. She often conversed with her friends about the Cullens. She follows Edward, pestering him for information because she had a feeling he was different.

Buffy: (Season 2, episodes 9 & 17): Buffy enters her bedroom and finds Angel standing aside, waiting for her. He tells her that he climbed in through her window. He visits her room frequently and even drew a picture of her sleeping.
Twilight: Bella gets off the phone in her bedroom and finds Edward standing aside, waiting for her. He tells her that he came in through her window and has been watching her sleep for months.

Angel stalks Buffy and becomes jealous when she interacts with other men.
Edward stalks Bella and becomes jealous when she interacts with other men.

Buffy: (Season 1, ep.5 & Season 2, ep.7): Angel dislikes that Owen is expressing interest in Buffy. Angel stands aside and jealously watches when Buffy is hanging out and talking to Owen.
Twilight: (Eclipse): Edward dislikes that Jacob is expressing interest in Bella. He usually stares angrily or stands aside and jealously watches when Bella talks to Jacob.

Angel's eyes turn yellow.
Edward's eyes turn yellow.

Buffy: Angel's eyes turn yellow during the times he vamps out.
Twilight: Edwards eyes turn yellow during certain times.

7.
The first kiss in Buffy's room was hard for Angel.
The first kiss in Bella's room was hard for Edward.

Buffy: (Season 1, episode 7): Angel kisses Buffy for the first time in her room. When the kissing gets heated, Angel pulls away as if he's distressed. He then vamps out before throwing himself out of the window to get away from Buffy.
Twilight: Edward kisses Bella for the first time in her room. When the kissing gets heated, Edward's face begins to strain as if he's in pain. He then demands to stop before throwing himself back against the wall to get away from Bella.

8.
Buffy's oblivious single mother.
Bella's oblivious single father.

Buffy: Buffy's single mother has no idea her daughter is dating a vampire.
Twilight: Bella's single father has no idea his daughter is dating a vampire.

Awkward high school boy attempts to ask Buffy out.
Awkward high school boy attempts to ask Bella out.

Buffy: (Season 3, episode 3): Scott stutters and appears shy as he attempts to ask Buffy on a date. Buffy turns him down because of what she's going through with Angel.
Twilight: Mike stutters and appears shy as he attempts to ask Bella to prom. Bella turns him down because of what she's going through with Edward.

10.
Buffy was able to read people's minds, except Angel's.
Edward is able to read people's minds, except Bella's.

Buffy: (Season 3, episode 18): Buffy has temporary mind-reading abilities and attempts to read Angel's mind but soon realizes that she can't. She lets Angel know.
Twilight: Edward has mind-reading abilities and attempts to read Bella's mind but soon realizes that he can't. He lets Bella know.

11.
Vampire, Drusilla, has premonitions of the future.
Vampire, Alice, has premonitions of the future.

Buffy: Drusilla was able to have premonitions as a human. She eventually became insane before being made into a vampire in 1880.
Twilight: Alice was able to have premonitions as a human. She was eventually committed to an asylum before being made into a vampire in 1901.

Note: Although Alice's past is extremely similar to Drusilla's past, their present characters are different. Since Drusilla became a villain and Alice became like Cordelia's character on 'Angel' (Buffy spin-off series) (1999-2004).
Angel: Angel's friend, Cordelia, has premonitions of the future; uses it to warn the gang of impending danger.
Twilight: Edward's sister, Alice, has premonitions of the future; uses it to warn the gang of impending danger.

12.
"The Master" opposes Buffy and Angel's relationship.
"The Volturi" oppose Bella and Edward's relationship.

Buffy: (Season 1, episode 7): The Master (ancient vampire ruler/ head order of Vampires), expresses his dislike of Angel and Buffy together.
Twilight: (New Moon): The Volturi (coven of ancient vampires/ head order of Vampires), express their dislike of Edward and Bella together.

13.
Angel can't sleep with Buffy because he will lose his soul.
Edward can't sleep with Bella because he might kill her.

Buffy: (Season 2, episode 14): Jenny informs Buffy that sleeping with Angel caused him to lose his soul. After he regains his soul at the end of Season 2, he can't risk sleeping with Buffy.
Twilight: (Eclipse): Jacob informs Bella that she can't sleep with Edward as a human or she'll die.

Angel must suck Buffy's blood in order to save his life.
Edward must suck Bella's blood in order to save her life.

Buffy: (Season 3, episode 22): As angel is dying from a toxin that is fatal to vampires, he must drink the blood of a slayer to be cured. Angel begs Buffy not to make him drink, for fear he may not be able to stop. Then he starts drinking Buffy's blood and finds the ability to stop. He then takes her to a hospital, where she recovers.
Twilight: As Bella is dying from a vampire venom fatal to humans, Edward is told he can suck the venom out to cure Bella. Edward begs Carlisle for another option, for fear he may not be able to stop. Then he starts drinking Bella's blood and finds the ability to stop. He then takes her to a hospital, where she recovers.

15.
Buffy's gang kill the evil vampire that bit her, then smash him to pieces.
Edward's gang kill the vampire that bit Bella by ripping him to pieces.

Buffy: (Season 1, ep.12, Season 2, ep.1): After Buffy is bitten, Buffy and the gang kill the evil vampire, then later smash his skeleton to pieces.
Twilight: After Bella was bitten, Edward's family/gang rip the evil vampire to pieces.

16.
Vampire child is killed by evil vampire.
Vampire child is killed by evil vampire.

Buffy: (Season 1, ep.5, Season 2, ep.3): An evil vampire villain, The Master, sends his vampire goons out to build a vampire army that will later be used to attack and kill Buffy. A child is bitten by one the goons and becomes a vampire. Later, that child is killed by an evil vampire named Spike.
Twilight: (Eclipse): An evil vampire villain, Victoria, sends her goon, Riley, out to build a vampire army that will later be used to attack and kill Bella. A child is bitten by the goon and becomes a vampire. Later, that child is killed by an evil vampire named Felix.

17.
After realizing the danger he put Buffy in, Angel leaves for a while.
After realizing the danger he puts Bella in, Edward leaves for a while.

Buffy: (Season 3, episode 22): Shortly after having to suck Buffy's blood to save his own life, Angel decides to leave and end their relationship. Later, Buffy sees his image during various times of need. (Like after Graduation Day or in the Bronx). Angel ends up coming back and is rude towards Buffy's new boyfriend, Riley.
Twilight: (New Moon): Shorty after having to suck Bella's blood to save her life, Edward decides to leave and end their relationship. Later, Bella sees Edward's image during times she's being risky or dangerous. (Like after jumping off a cliff or riding a motorcycle) Edward ends up coming back and is rude towards Bella's ex-boyfriend, Jacob.

The mistaken belief that Buffy had died by drowning.

Buffy: (Season 1, episode 12 & Season 2, episode 9): The watcher's council mistakenly believed that Buffy had died (and stayed dead) after drowning; thus fulfilling the master's prophecy. Therefore, a new slayer was 'called'. However, they did not know that she was brought back when Xander performed CPR.
Twilight: (New Moon): Alice and Edward mistakenly believed that Bella had died (and stayed dead) after drowning; thus fulfilling Alice's premonition. Therefore, Edward tried to kill himself. However, they did not know that she was brought back when Jacob performed CPR.

19.
Buffy takes her vampire boyfriend to prom.
Bella takes her vampire boyfriend to prom.

Buffy: (Season 3, episode 20): Buffy and Angel attend her prom at Sunnydale High and slow dance after having a brief conversation.
Twilight: Edward and Bella attend her prom at Forks High School and slow dance after having a brief conversation.

20.
When Buffy has sex with Spike, the walls collapse around them; Buffy is bruised.
When Bella has sex with Edward, the bed collapses around them; Bella is bruised.

Buffy: (Season 6, episode 9): Buffy and her vampire interest, Spike, have passionate sex in an abandoned house. The walls crumble and crack as they have sex. They awake the next morning to find that the walls have collapsed around them. Buffy has bruises on her face.
Twilight: (Breaking Dawn): Bella and vampire husband, Edward, have passionate sex during their honeymoon. The bed crumbles and cracks as they have sex. Bella awakens the next morning to find that the bed is broken around her. Bella has bruises on her arm and back.

Edward's gang of 7.

Edward's gang of 7 family members is similar to Buffy's gang during Season 2 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I have created a chart below describing the similarities between all of the characters.
